Home for the Holidays

Our Fav Holiday Decor

It is not the holiday season until the home decor goes up. While the date as to when it is acceptable to put up holiday decor remains debatable, everyone can agree that there is something about a house adorned with decor that making the season feel more magical!

Even with a small budget, it is easy to transform your interior. The key to not looking like the holiday store dumped its inventory in your living room…have a plan! Think about the theme you are looking to achieve. We have divided our fav holiday decor into four themes to simplify your shopping and planning.

Modern Wonderland

Holiday Decor IdeasWithin a Modern Wonderland, there are sub-themes. Are you looking to create that clean, fresh white Christmas look or prefer warm and cozy dark tones with brass or gold accents?

Canadian Tire | Lantern
Canadian Tire | Lantern

Dollarama is a go-to destination once you have a theme in mind.  Look for accent trays as they are a wonderful way to curate a small vignette of items. While you are there stock up on fairy lights and candles as they will be a staple for bringing in the magical feel to your wonderland.

Adding accents such as lanterns around the fireplace or on mantles is another great way to add ambiance and that holiday glow to your space.

If you haven’t heard Jillian Harris has her own line of holiday decor at Canadian Tire this season. It encompasses that Modern Wonderland vibe focusing on creams, and whites with hints of cherry red add a piece of her collection to yours.

Don’t forget about setting the stage for entering your Modern Wonderland to the outside of your home. There are many modern wreath options at Marshalls or if the season brings out your inner Martha Stewart find your own greenery at Walmart and build your own wreath. Finally, complete your WOW with an outdoor display with twinkling holiday lights like this Christmas Gifts outdoor display from Canadian Tire.

The Best Kept Traditions

Holidays are rooted in traditions and if you are a traditionalist you may not want to steer yourself too far into soft holiday blues and pinks. We have all the red and green ideas that you and Santa would be proud of. Anchor your home with holiday vibes by grabbing a few Poinsettia plants from Thrifty Foods.

Marshalls | Toss Cushion

Swap out your regular toss cushions for something a little more festive! So many options at Marshalls it is hard to settle on just one so grab a few! Mix and match patterns to give your seating a holiday makeover.

While you are at Marshalls grab a scented pine candle as this will be a must-have when we move to the powder room to give it some holiday flair. Hand Towels from QE Home and you can officially check off one more room from your list.

Global Village | Ornaments
Global Village | Ornaments

We are fascinated with Christmas Trees. Everyone has their own unique style when it comes to decorating this holiday staple. Traditionalists often use it as a collection of memories from years past, but if that Rudolph ornament made in Kindergarten is now one eye short and dawning a broken antler, it may be time to let the little guy retire from his tree duties! We suggest heading to Global Village as they have a wonderful assortment of ornaments to fill in the gaps on your tree.

Murchies Napkins
Murchies | Napkins

Hosting this holiday? Stock up on festive napkins from Murchie’s Tea & Coffee. If you were lucky enough to leave the stress of hosting to someone else, we love the idea of gifting some coffee or tea to the hostess!

If you have little ones still at home, you know the awe and wonder that giant outdoor inflatables bring as you drive around Victoria enjoying the decorated lights tour. Adorable options at Canadian Tire from oversized Santas to penguins with a glow snowball. Bring the kids with you when choosing your display. Even if you are particular about your style, you can give them the outside and you can focus on the inside decor.

Oh What Fun

Gnome Holiday Mat
Hillside | Gnome Door Mat

For those that bring on the festive fun when it comes to December decor, you are a cross between the Traditionalist and the Modern Wonderland. You lean toward choosing a bit of each and throwing in items of whimsy.  If you were one of the lucky ones, you were able to take advantage of our Black Friday Bounce Back and grabbed one of our holiday door mats. We love the little gnomes as it adds that hint of playfulness to your entranceway.

From the classics to the new, Bolen Books has an extensive collection of Holiday Books. We love the idea of creating a coffee table collection of your favourite holiday reads. Guests will often be thrown back to their most cherished reads from their youth and you will enjoy the conversations leading down memory lane that come from a curated small collection of books.

Hallmark Snow Globe
Hallmark | Snow Globe

Snow globes are one of our favourite pieces of holiday decor. It sums up the magic of the season so perfectly. Do you sit by and wait for the highly anticipated role-out of the latest Hallmark holiday movie? If this sounds like you or someone you know, this snow globe from Hallmark is the perfect addition to any room. If you have a holiday playlist and love to add new tunes we love Snowglobe from Canadian musician, Danny Michel.

Still need to add some sparkle and twinkle to your fun decor, add this Festive LED Crystal Tree from Showcase. At 14″  it is tall enough to be a focal point on a table but subtle enough that you enjoy the warm glow, no disco strobe lights!

Claires | Mug

Looking for ideas for your family-friendly party? Have multiple treat stations and add inexpensive decor, such as these 3D Hanging Snowflakes from Walmart.  Have an adult table with appetizers and desserts from Purdy’s. When aren’t their Chocolates a crowd-pleaser? For the kiddos make a hot chocolate station with cute gingerbread mugs from Claire’s. Add whip cream and various sprinkles for each child to customize their own drink. Of course, ensure you have parental supervision at that table…you can volunteer, it is not just the kids that love a good cup of cocoa!
